{"id":171,"date":"2014-04-25T07:19:26","date_gmt":"2014-04-25T07:19:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sterlingslyce.com\/?p=171"},"modified":"2014-04-25T07:22:40","modified_gmt":"2014-04-25T07:22:40","slug":"functional-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sterlingslyce.com\/?p=171","title":{"rendered":"Functional Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a Contemplative Dance Practice<br \/>\nthat involves just the eyes:<br \/>\ndirect focus, eyes closed,<br \/>\nsoft gaze, and peripheral vision, or even<br \/>\nlooking at the spaces between things.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is a way to dance, when<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 150px;\">\u2014forget getting out of bed\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">bravery<br \/>\nis staying awake,<br \/>\nis the willingness to continue<br \/>\nto draw breath through the static of pain<br \/>\nor the crushing weight of<br \/>\ni don&#8217;t know what, something raging,<br \/>\nsomething not<br \/>\nfunctional<br \/>\nis a loose term, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Once I thought it was such a priority,<br \/>\nbecoming a functioning adult, a contributing<br \/>\nmainstreamer.<br \/>\nI tried hunching my shoulders and cracking the whip,<br \/>\nsucking in my gut until I could<br \/>\nno longer draw breath&#8211;<br \/>\nall this to fit it&#8217;s dictate.<\/p>\n<p>Then something broke;<br \/>\nand I began to celebrate my dysfunction, my<br \/>\ndisassociation making excuses<br \/>\nfor me,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px;\">\nI am not like them<br \/>\nstay separate, out of reach or<br \/>\ngive up when it\u2019s hard to say<br \/>\nwhat I mean<\/p>\n<p>reducing myself to miscommunication<br \/>\nand imbalanced equations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now I realize more about what my functions really are.<br \/>\nI function each day<br \/>\nas a conduit, a conductor, a translator.<br \/>\nOr a mirror.<br \/>\nA balancing agent.<br \/>\nAn answer.<\/p>\n<p>I can be functional while catatonic<br \/>\nbecause I am a poetic scientist<br \/>\nobserving \u2014peripheral gaze\u2014<br \/>\nmy own unresponsiveness.<br \/>\nI listen to the voices fire command after command<br \/>\nafter command<br \/>\nand answer with<br \/>\na blink at the edge of capacity<br \/>\nbecause today this is my dance.<\/p>\n<p>I function<br \/>\nas a lover,<br \/>\nusing the special nuances I know you like, filling page after page,<br \/>\nor making love for hours,<br \/>\nseeing only that darkness of my eyelids and<br \/>\nthe brilliant flashes of light.<\/p>\n<p>I practice listening.<br \/>\nI am trying to learn to stand myself,<br \/>\nto hear the bias and the slander and the poison<br \/>\nand not use it<br \/>\nbecause<br \/>\nit might be my function to sing a song about you<br \/>\nand I must be still so I can hear all the notes<br \/>\nwritten in the spaces between silence.<\/p>\n<p>I function as your muse,<br \/>\na friend<br \/>\nlooking directly at you, becoming that spark<br \/>\nigniting movement suddenly,<br \/>\nchanging behavior in wild fits<br \/>\nor driving you delightfully mad.<\/p>\n<p>I can be a functional fantasy,<br \/>\ninviting your gaze to slide over me I<br \/>\ndo things for you that you might not do for yourself.<br \/>\nI remind you of things and<br \/>\ndistract you from things.<br \/>\nI even let you close your eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t possibly compensate you<br \/>\nfor all the time you have spent<br \/>\nbeing kind to me, for what you have taught me.<br \/>\nAnd I swear I will forget the tally marks as I learn<br \/>\nto relax into this economy<br \/>\nof caring for one another.<\/p>\n<p>And what if it were also my job<br \/>\nmy function<br \/>\nto be optimistic,<br \/>\nconfident<br \/>\nthat despite all of this appearance of brokenness<br \/>\nwith its clamoring symptoms and crippling side effects<br \/>\nI can soften my gaze, knowing<br \/>\nI am complete?<\/p>\n<p>What if we were to realize<br \/>\nwe work,<br \/>\nand we each get to decide<br \/>\nhow we fit together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a Contemplative Dance Practice that involves just the eyes: direct focus, eyes closed, soft gaze, and peripheral vision, or even looking at the spaces between things.
